Outdoor Kitchen Cost in Adelaide — From Basic BBQ to Full Build

An outdoor kitchen in Adelaide costs anywhere from $4,000 (a BBQ slab and a built-in cabinet) to $40,000+ (a full kitchen with bench, plumbed sink, fridge, oven, and pizza oven under a covered alfresco). The variables are scope, materials, and services.

Tier 1: BBQ area on a slab — $4,000–$8,000

Basic spec: concrete slab or paved area, freestanding BBQ, a small built-in cabinet for the gas bottle, and maybe a benchtop. No plumbing, no electrical beyond a powerpoint.

Common in family backyards as the entry-point upgrade from “BBQ on the lawn.” Quick to install, easy to scope.

Tier 2: Built-in BBQ + bench — $8,000–$18,000

Custom-built bench (typically 2.4-3.0m long) with a built-in BBQ, drawers, gas connection, and a powerpoint. Stone or concrete benchtop. Often integrated into a pergola structure.

What you get: a permanent BBQ “kitchen” without sinks or fridges. Suits 80% of Adelaide homes that want the look without the full plumbing investment.

Tier 3: Full outdoor kitchen — $18,000–$40,000

Full kitchen treatment: bench (3-5m), built-in BBQ, side burner, plumbed sink, integrated fridge, sometimes a pizza oven. Stone or polished-concrete benchtop. Splashback. Pendant lighting under the pergola.

Plumbing requires licensed plumber ($1,500–$3,000 for cold + drain). Electrical needs a licensed sparky ($800–$2,000 for circuit + powerpoints + lighting).

Tier 4: Premium outdoor kitchen — $40,000+

Adds: built-in wood-fired pizza oven, multi-zone refrigeration (drinks fridge + main fridge), gas-fired side stove, smoker, integrated sound + lighting controls, custom stone or porcelain benchtops, premium fixtures.

Common in premium eastern-suburbs builds and hilltop properties with views.

Cost drivers

Bench length and depth

Standard kitchen bench: 600mm deep × 900mm tall. Outdoor benches typically 700-800mm deep to accommodate larger appliances and water-resistant overhangs. Each metre of bench costs $1,500–$3,500 in materials + labour.

Benchtop material

  • Concrete: $250–$400/lm — durable, casts on-site
  • Engineered stone: $500–$900/lm — beautiful but UV-sensitive (some products fade)
  • Granite: $400–$700/lm — UV-stable
  • Porcelain: $700–$1,200/lm — premium, fully UV-stable, low-maintenance
  • Stainless steel: $400–$600/lm — commercial look, hot-resistant

BBQ unit

Built-in BBQs from $1,500 (Coffeed, Beefeater entry) to $8,000+ (Crossray, Lynx, premium imports).

Pizza oven

  • Pre-built ($2,500–$5,000): drop-in fibreglass dome, gas or wood-fired
  • Custom built ($5,000–$15,000): masonry construction, wood-fired, takes 2-3 weeks to build

Plumbing

Cold water + drain to outdoor sink: $1,500–$3,000 from a licensed plumber. Add hot water (running an outdoor service hot line): $800–$1,500 extra.

Electrical

Outdoor electrical needs RCD-protected circuits. Extension off the house circuit: $400–$1,000. Dedicated sub-board for premium kitchens: $1,500–$3,000.

Council approval

Outdoor kitchens themselves rarely need approval. The structures over them often do:

  • Pergola attached to house: development approval typical
  • Pergola freestanding under 25sqm: often exempt
  • Permanent gas connections: gas-fitter compliance required

What separates a good outdoor kitchen build

  • Pergola or roof above it. UV-exposed appliances and benchtops degrade in years, not decades.
  • Drainage in the bench. Spilled drinks and rainwater need somewhere to go.
  • Quality fittings. 316 stainless minimum on coastal properties, otherwise marine-grade.
  • Proper ventilation for built-in BBQs and pizza ovens.
  • Lighting integrated into the build, not added as an afterthought.

Common mistakes

  • Putting it in full sun. A south-facing wall gets all-day sun in summer and the bench is unusable from 10am to 5pm. North-east aspect with afternoon shade is ideal.
  • Skipping the splashback. Cooking splatter and water marks on render or paint look terrible after 12 months.
  • Wrong fridge type. Indoor fridges fail quickly outdoors. Spec outdoor-rated.
  • Underspeccing the gas line. A pizza oven and BBQ together need adequate gas flow — get the gas-fitter to size it.
